Ingrid Merkel, 84, former vice provost and dean of undergraduate studies at the Catholic University of America passed away peacefully on June 2, 2023 from complications of Parkinson's disease after a long struggle with the illness.
Ingrid was born and raised in Cologne, Germany. After studies at the University of Cologne she came to Catholic University and in 1966 received her doctorate in German and comparative literature. She then joined the Department of Modern Languages and served on its faculty for 42 years, retiring in 2008.
In the early 1980s, through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Dr. Merkel developed the University Honors Program, consisting of sequences of courses in philosophy, the humanities, social sciences, communication studies, and environmental studies, and served as its director for 25 years. She was a mentor to generations of Honors students, many of whom stayed in touch with her for decades after graduation.
In retirement, Dr. Merkel turned to her love of writing, published a novel, and was working on a book based on her father's daily letters to her mother during WWII from the front in the Baltic region, where he died.
Dr. Merkel is survived by her husband, Antanas Sužiedėlis, professor emeritus of Psychology and former dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at the Catholic University, and his children Jolanta, Ramūnas, and Darius, and grandchildren Alexandra, Maximilian, Natalie, and Alena.
Funeral arrangements are private. Contributions in her honor may be made to the Ingrid Merkel Endowed Fund for Scholarships at the Catholic University established to support educational travel for Honors program students.
