Harry was born to Mary Alice (Wigley) and Abram Ziegler Gottwals on November 9, 1940, in Millersville, MD. Even though his curiosity for life took him to many places, his heart never left the tobacco fields and waterfront of Southern Maryland. Harry was fortunate to have the love of his life at his side for most of this journey. He and his high school sweetheart, Mary Helen Rice, were Married June 16, 1962. Together, they built a purpose-filled life with their three boys that was centered around family, friends, and a strong sense of community. Once the boys were fully grown and pursuing their own careers, Mary and Harry’s sense of adventure took them across the country to start the next chapter of their lives in Billings, MT. They quickly became pillars within the community and from there, launched innumerable adventures with friends.
As a young man, Harry's pursuit of knowledge led him to the University of Maryland, where he earned a bachelor’s degree from the School of Agriculture, and later a Master’s in Business Administration from Loyola College. This foundation of education laid the groundwork for a successful career and a lifelong commitment to learning. Harry's professional endeavors were characterized by dedication, integrity, and a strong sense of responsibility. He began his career in 1962 when he joined Maryland National Bank. He rose in the ranks of that organization until 1989 when he retired as the Bank’s Executive for Consumer and Business Banking.
While greatly respected as a professional, Harry will be most remembered for his service to others. His faith drew him to serve the United Methodist Church throughout his life and led him on numerous mission trips with the Sager-Brown Depot in Louisiana (one of his favorites). During his time in Billings, he touched many charitable organizations, but left a great legacy in the Billings Depot. He and Mary helped resurrect the old train depot from near ruins to a beautiful centerpiece of the community. This was a critical element to the restoration of Billings’ historic district.
Unfortunately, Harry and Mary’s journey ended too soon when Mary passed in 2015. During her illness, Harry stood by her side, providing unwavering care and support throughout her battle. Their bond was a true testament to the power of love and commitment, and their shared strength inspired those around them.
After the loss of his wife, Mary, it was at Sager-Brown (UMCOR) that Harry found companionship once again. In October 2017 Harry was introduced by God to Lisa Stanhope, who shared his love of service through the United Methodist Church. They were married on December 22, 2019. Unfortunately, Harry was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease early in their relationship, limiting the list of new adventures they were able to share.
As a father, Harry was a guiding light, instilling in his children the importance of kindness, compassion, and hard work. His unconditional love and unwavering support provided a solid foundation for their growth and success. Harry's legacy lives on through his children, Clif Gottwals of Highlands, NC, Philip Gottwals of Friendship, MD, and Bill (Kim) Gottwals of Billings, MT.
Being a grandfather brought Harry immense joy and fulfillment. He embraced the role with open arms, cherishing every moment spent with his grandchildren, Talbott, Stephanie, Daniel, Addison, and Van. Some of his favorite moments were spent crossing the country with them in his camper and giving rides on the four-wheeler or in the bucket of his tractor.
Everyone who met Harry will remember his passion for “projects” and his love of connecting with people. His energy was contagious, but he never hesitated to slow down and listen when he was needed the most. Harry will be missed by all who knew him, and his fingerprints will remain on all that he touched.
A memorial visitation for Harry will be held Friday, July 21, 2023 from 2 to 4 pm at John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, MD 21401. Further memorial visitation will occur Saturday, July 22, 2023 from 10 to 11 am in Friendship United Methodist Church, 22 Friendship Road, Friendship, MD 20758. A memorial service will begin at 11 am. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall from 12 to 2 pm.
