August 27, 1937 - May 21, 2022
Jerry was the son of John Ryan and Ellen Glynn, Irish Catholic immigrants who settled on Long Island. His father was a blacksmith and his mother was a housekeeper, so Jerry learned the value of hard work at a young age. He had two older brothers, Dan and John.
At St. Dominic’s High School he committed himself to his studies. It was there he met his future wife, Barbara. He excelled at academics, winning many honors and awards and graduated 2nd in his class. He received a full scholarship to attend Niagara University where he was enrolled in ROTC and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army Reserve upon his graduation in 1959.
After graduation, Jerry attended Seton Hall Medical School in Jersey City, NJ. He married the love of his life, Barbara, on January 23rd, 1965. Jerry did his internship, at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. He continued with a medical residency in Pathology at The NY Hospital Cornell Medical Center where Barbara also worked as a nurse. Jerry eventually became Board Certified in three different medical disciplines: Pathology, Hematology and Nuclear Medicine. Barbara and Jerry had their first son, Daniel, while living in New York City.
The family moved to Boston, MA, for 2 more years of Pathology Residency at The Deaconess Hospital where their second son James was born. The Army then sent the family to Hunter Army Air Field, Georgia, (Ft. Stewart) where their 1st daughter, Ellen, was born. There, he served with distinction as an Army Major and Physician.
Upon completion of his service, the family moved back to Long Island, settling in Bellport Village where he continued his clinical career, while also teaching Pathology at Stony Brook University. During this time, their 2nd daughter, Kathleen, was born.
Jerry served as President of the American Heart Association and volunteered for many years at the St. Vincent DePaul Society. He was active in his parish, teaching confirmation, CCD, RCIA, serving as a lector, and singing in the choir. He enjoyed cycling, swimming, and was an avid reader. He could beat all comers in Jeopardy and no one was better at giving bear hugs. While proud of his Irish heritage, he loved America and was a true patriot.
After retiring, Barbara and Jerry moved to Annapolis in 2015.
Jerry was a devoted husband, loving father, and grandfather. Above all else, he loved God and was a man of faith. He was predeceased by his son, Dan in 2015. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, their 3 remaining children and 13 Grandchildren: Fiona, Connor, John Paul Ryan, Danny, Patrick, Liam, Aidan, Maggie and Finn McInerney, and Valerie, Madeline, Stephanie and Jack Brandi, who along with the rest of his family and friends will miss him dearly.
The family will receive friends at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester Street Annapolis, MD 21401 on Monday June 6, 2022 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM.
