Eunice Joan (Diamond) Powers, 90, of Annapolis, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday afternoon, March 14, 2021, surrounded by many family members who loved her dearly. She will be buried on Saturday after a Catholic Funeral Mass. Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1930, Eunice moved to Longmeadow, Massachusetts for high school after losing both of her parents in 1943, at which time, she lived with her older brother, Leo, and was given much motherly guidance by her late mother’s younger sister, Aunt Estelle Tracy. Eunice graduated magna cum laude and second in her class at Cathedral High School in Springfield, MA in 1948 and went on to earn a B.S. in English from the University of Massachusetts in 1952. It was at college that she met, fell in love with, and, after graduating, married Joseph A. Powers, Jr. of Pittsfield, MA. Together, they had three sons: David Powers, Gary Powers, and Craig Powers. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1964. Joseph Powers, Jr. died in 1988.
In 1964, Eunice began working in the Personnel Department at the headquarters for MassMutual Life Insurance Company in Springfield, MA while raising her three sons in East Longmeadow. In 1980, she moved to Annapolis and began working at IIT Research Institute in their HR department. Her youngest son, Craig was, at that time, a member of the Class of 1982 at the nearby U.S. Naval Academy. Eunice retired in 1992 and remained in Annapolis for the next 29 years – with a nice trip to Norway in 1993.
She was preceded in death by her one sibling, Leo J. Diamond of Longmeadow, MA in 1992 and by both of her parents, James J. Diamond and Eunice Elizabeth (Tracy) Diamond, both of Newark, New Jersey.
In addition to her three sons, she was blessed with ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren (with at least one more on the way). Her grandchildren are Cody Powers, Dr. Emily Furbee, Alexander Powers, Claire Keeler, Joseph A. Powers, III, James Powers, Frances Powers, Lily Powers, Erik Powers and Ellen Gunyuzlu.
Her great grandchildren are Christian Chapman, Aiden & Katherine Kerrigan, Reese & Evelyn Furbee, Andrew, Charlie, Lucy, Marian, and Genevieve Keeler -- and Eloise Powers on her way and due any day now.
Eunice was blessed to have received Last Rites the night before she passed away, and further blessed to be surrounded by many loving members of her family when the Lord took her home to Heaven.
There will be a viewing on Friday evening, March 19, in her beloved Annapolis at the John Taylor Funeral Home on 147 Duke of Gloucester Street from 6 to 8 PM, followed the next morning at 9 AM by a funeral Mass at St. Mary’s Church, at 109 Duke of Gloucester Street, followed by a private burial.
