Born in 1937, to Thomas and Mary Ellen Finucane in New York City, his parents were Irish immigrants from County Kerry. Dan was a proud first-generation Irish-American who grew up on Willis Ave in the Bronx. After graduating from Cardinal Hayes High School, he entered the Army reserves while attending The John Jay College, City University of New York, and majored in police science.
Dan joined the New York State Troopers and rose to the rank of detective. He was recruited as an investigator to the Federal Bureau of Narcotics under the Department of Treasury, where he completed many years of distinguished service in law enforcement.
Dan then went into the business world, where he focused on the ownership of restaurants and pubs in New York City. He owned well-known and thriving establishments, including the Beef and Ale, Foggy Dew, and his beloved Crock of Gold on 2nd Ave, named after his favorite book. A fan of George Washington, Dan also established The Cherry Tree Restaurant in Washington Township, NJ, where in 1971, he would meet the love of his life.
In May 1972, Dan married Kathleen, his best friend and partner for over 50 years. Their wedding reception was held at the Cherry Tree, and they embarked on a three-month honeymoon throughout New England.
Ever the entrepreneur, he left the restaurant business to focus on his family and became a small business owner. He established Team Life Care Company, a developer for retirement homes across the country. Dan was active in his church communities of Boca Raton, FL, and Roanoke, VA, where he was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus and served as President of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians Division 1.
Above all, Dan was known as a devoted husband and father. He shared his love of swimming, tennis, skiing, and travel with his children. When he retired, he never missed watching a Yankees baseball game. His greatest joy was watching his grandchildren grow.
Dan is survived by his devoted wife, Kathleen; his daughter, Mary Katherine Richardson (David), and grandchildren, Thomas, Joseph, and Elizabeth; and son Brian (Carly), and grandchildren, Kate and Clare. He is also survived by his beloved sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Frances Murphy, and their children, Patricia, Ellen, Thomas, and Kevin.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, a donation in Dan’s name be made to Cardinal Hayes High School, Bronx, NYC. There will be a funeral mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Annapolis on November 19, with a reception to follow.
