Cindy Purnell (Cynthia Lee Purnell), 73, of Annapolis, Maryland, was found, deceased, on the morning of Tuesday, October 24, 2023, in her condominium. Her health had deteriorated over the past couple of years, and in August she was diagnosed with COPD, the cause of her death.
Cindy was born on August 31, 1950 to Jane Lee Purnell and Richard A. Purnell, Sr., in Washington, D.C. She graduated from Annapolis High School in 1968. Prior to that, she attended Towsontown Junior High School in Towson, Maryland.
After high school, Cindy worked for 28 years in the Treasury Department, State of Maryland.
Cindy had a passion for animals, especially cats. For 23 years, she was a regular volunteer at the SPCA of Anne Arundel County (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), located in Annapolis. One of Cindy's favorite things was bowling. In later years she often visited the Annapolis Senior Center, where she made friends and enjoyed shooting pool, playing cards, and helping other seniors in need. She especially liked Wednesdays, when live music acts performed there.
She is survived by her older brother David R. (Catherine) Purnell in Minnesota; sister-in-law Jan Purnell (Baltimore); niece Renee Purnell (Baltimore); and first cousins Thomas Purnell (Virginia), Marianne Kernan (North Carolina), John Purnell (North Carolina), and Brian Purnell (Oregon). Cindy's love for her mother Jane and her brother David was unquestionable.
In addition to her blood-relatives, Cindy is survived by her longtime friend Alison Davis (aka Alison Brown-Davis) of Crownsville, Maryland and her children. Alison has been like a sister to Cindy, and steadfastly helped her through Cindy's most difficult times.
Cindy was predeceased by her parents, Richard A. Purnell, Sr. and Jane Lee Purnell (Annapolis), and her oldest brother Richard A. Purnell, Jr. (Baltimore).
Cindy's ashes will be interred beside her mother's grave at the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Annapolis.
