Carol L. Turner passed away peacefully on May 20, 2022. She was 87. The former Carol Levis grew up in Annapolis and began her schooling at Miss Woodward’s Primary School downtown. She attended secondary school at Roland Park Country School in Baltimore, where she was ultimately inducted into the Hall of Fame for field hockey and also excelled at basketball and lacrosse. She then attended Hollins College in Roanoke, VA. where she majored in Mathematics and continued playing field hockey, lacrosse, and basketball.
On June 15, 1955 she married then ENS Edmund L. Turner (USNA ’55) of Annapolis, and they lived in several Navy communities throughout the country (FL, RI, CT, CA, HI, VA, TX, and MD), lovingly raising their five children. Her family was her life.
In 1973 Carol and her family returned to Annapolis to live in her childhood home on the Severn. With renowned hospitality, she continually hosted joyous events and readily put together impromptu gatherings. She sponsored dozens of USNA Midshipmen over 20 years and always kept plenty of good food on hand, including her famous chili for Navy football weekends.
Having been married to a prominent USNA athlete and sponsoring many others, Carol remained a devoted Navy sports fan and was especially dedicated to the Navy, Salisbury and Coast Guard lacrosse teams. She also (somehow) remained a loyal Orioles fan.
Carol found peace around the water, highly inspired by annual trips with family to Maine, Florida and the Outer Banks, as well as her independent life at home overlooking Spa Creek. Later in life she was an avid reader and especially enjoyed crossword puzzles and sudoku, considered by all who knew her as an expert at these. Her world class crabcake and corn fritter recipes will remain treasured family secrets.
She was preceded by her childhood love, husband “Eddie” in 1998, and her youngest son Christopher R. “Bear” Turner in 2004.
She is survived by Edmund L. “Ed” Turner Jr. and wife Linda of Fleming Island, FL; Lisa T. Taylor and husband John of Appleton, ME; Charles A. “Charlie” Turner and wife Kateri of Annapolis, MD; Timothy H. “Tim” Turner and wife Rocio of Lilburn, GA; and Heather McDonald of Severna Park, MD. She has seven grandchildren: Tripp, Lindsay, Mallory, Brad, Jeff, Brittany, Rylan; and two great granddaughters: Lilly and Emma.
The family invites you to stop by Taylor Funeral Home in Annapolis on July 19, 2022, between 4:00 and 7:00 PM to share in fond memories of Carol. A service in celebration of her life will be held at St. Andrew’s Chapel, U.S. Naval Academy on July 20, 2022, at 2:00 PM, with inurnment at the U.S. Naval Academy Columbarium immediately following. Additional information about USNA access and details about a reception will follow.
Carol held true to supporting worthy causes until the very end. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject.org) or other veterans’ assistance organization.
