Carmen Fermandois Delgado, born on May 7, 1929, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 10, 2023 in Annapolis, Maryland. Carmen was born and raised in Santiago, Chile. She loved her Chilean heritage and she shared this love of her country with everyone she met. She studied at the University of Chile, and received a degree in social work. She later moved to Venezuela. One of her most rewarding jobs was at a women’s jail in Caracas, Venezuela, where she helped younger woman transition to life after prison. Carmen was the loving wife of the late Dr. Gustavo Delgado. They met at a medical conference in Caracas, and after a brief courtship, they wed a few months later in Caracas, Venezuela. They then returned to Annapolis, Maryland to raise their family. Carmen was predeceased by her mother, Carmen Fermandois, her brother, Germaine, and her father Alfonso. Her mother was her best friend and remained by her side her whole life.
Carmen was an active volunteer at Anne Arundel General Hospital, and served as a translator for Spanish speakers at the Annapolis police department. She also hosted Chilean students from the Naval Academy and welcomed numerous hispanic families to Anne Arundel County. She was a member of St. Mary’s Parish for many decades, and well into her 80’s, was actively involved with Saint Conrad’s Fraternity, participated in the Franciscan prayer groups, and helped others with meals and support services.
Carmen and Gustavo lived in the Winchester on the Severn community for more than 50 years, and had many wonderful friends and neighbors. Carmen raised a blended family with courage and a sense of adventure that was an inspiration to all. Everyone loved her sense of humor, and her larger than life personality will never be forgotten. Her adventurous spirit led her to travel the world with her husband and family, where she embraced many different cultures and opportunities.
Carmen had a love of flowers, gardening, music, and ballet. Her garden was filled with countless azaleas and beautiful plants all season long. She was a great entertainer, and enjoyed baking and cooking large Latin meals. Carmen loved spending time with family at her beach house in Bethany Beach, Delaware. The ocean was her happy place and always brought her peace.
She will be deeply missed by her entire family, including stepsons David (Gina) and Richard (Irene) Delgado, children, Carmen (Matt) Chalek, Gustavo (Giuditta) Delgado, Malena (John) Ruland, Susan Delgado (Lars Gunlicks) as well as 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
