Sukla Dutta, wife of Saradindu Dutta and mother to Sumit, Swati and Suman and grandmother to Abigail, Esme, Amelia, Liam and Viv, lived life well. She valued family and was close to and leaves behind her younger brothers Diptimoy (Aparna) Deb and Triptimoy (Purobi) Deb and sister Swapna (Niranjjan, dec.) Lodh and their families. She valued education having attended institutions of higher learning including Presidency College in Calcutta, Ohio State University (masters) and ensured her children and grandchildren understood the importance that “education can never be taken away from you.” She was born in pre independence India in Mymensingh Bangladesh, lived through independance from the British, migrated to Kolkata and emigrated to America in the 1960s at a time America was coming to terms with its own past. Once here she devoted herself to her growing family and her work as a researcher applying techniques including electron microscopy. She loved to cook for family and friends. She made sure her grandchildren knew how to make luchi. Sukla befriended and was supported by the Bengali community in Columbus, Ohio and Southeast Michigan. Sukla loved parties; both as host and guest. Recently when asked if she would like a glass of wine at our next gathering, Sukla’s response was “Let’s have two glasses of wine!” Sukla will be greatly missed by many friends and relatives and especially mourned by her children and grandchildren.
A visitation for Sukla will be held Monday, September 5, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 S 4th Avenue, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104.
