Stephen Maggio

Maggio, Stephen G. Ann Arbor, Michigan In the early hours of April 16, 2015, STEPHEN G. MAGGIO passed away in his Ann Arbor home, surrounded by his family. Steve was born on April 23, 1949, to Sally and George Maggio of Ypsilanti, both of whom preceded him in death. He attended Ypsilanti Roosevelt School, where he formed many lifelong friendships. After graduating from Michigan State University, he enrolled at the Kendall School of Design in Grand Rapids to hone his skills in advertising art and design. In 1972, he married Ginger (Steinman) Maggio, also of Ypsilanti. Following his graduation from Kendall, the couple relocated to Ann Arbor where Steve was employed as a graphic designer at Gustafson-Whitmer Advertising. In 1976, he launched his own graphic design firm known as The Maggio Line. In the nearly 40 years that followed, Steve attracted a large and diverse client roster that spanned business and industry, colleges and universities, and the nonprofit sector. He also took on countless pro bono projects over the years. A gifted designer, photographer and illustrator, Steve's multiple talents enabled him to tackle virtually any project: from award-winning ad campaigns, annual reports and direct mail to books, tradeshow booths, videos and educational exhibits. He handled the digital design revolution with ease, although he always preferred using pencil, markers and watercolors. Steve was a man of many and varied interests. Most important among them was his wife, his son Scott, and his extended family. He was a passionate fisherman who never missed an opportunity to pack his gear and head out with his "fishing buddies" in pursuit of the big one. He was an accomplished golfer. A master home handyman, builder, gardener, and do-it-yourselfer. An avid reader. A superb cook whose hand-crafted jams, preserves and smoked fish were coveted gifts among friends and acquaintances. Steve was also a sports enthusiast. He loved coaching Scott's Recreation League baseball teams, the kids on the teams and their families. Most recently, he had become a devoted fan of the Liverpool Football Club, a passion he shared with his son. In addition to his wife Ginger, son Scott and future daughter-in-law Emily Harwell, Steve is survived by his brother Jim (Elaine) Maggio; his sister-in-law Jill (Steinman) Damon; his brothers-in-law Ned Steinman (Shelley Harger) and Ian (Rosemary) Steinman; and his father-in-law Herm Steinman; as well as nieces and nephews Jeff Maggio and Julie (Ben) Tappenden (Tyler and Gracie); Josh (Jennifer) Damon (Keira, Cal and Lexi); Kylar Damon; Riley Damon Bean; Re Steainman; and Kayla and Luke Steinman. He also leaves behind a multitude of friends who will forever miss his wry humor, his wit, his entertaining conversation, his energetic spirit andabove allhis unfailing kindness and generosity. A memorial service for Steve will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, at the Muehlig Funeral Chapel in Ann Arbor.
