Robert Glenn Carter, age 96 of Ann Arbor, Michigan (formerly of Stockport, Iowa), passed away peacefully Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at University Senior Living in Ann Arbor. Robert was born September 8, 1928 in Stockport, Iowa to the late Allen and Maree Carter. He graduated from Stockport High School in 1946, attended the University of New Mexico 1947-1949, and graduated with a BA in English from the University of Iowa in 1951. From 1951-1953, Robert served in Germany with the 9th Hospital Center AMEDS USAREUR at the Landstuhl Army Medical Center, whose 1,000-bed hospital was constructed during this period and officially dedicated April 5, 1953. In 1956, he received an AMLS from the University of Michigan and was employed in the Acquisitions Department of the Graduate Library until his retirement in 1998.
Robert’s interests included stamp collecting, photography, gardening, and all types of needlework. He traveled to the Canadian Rockies, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, and visited Europe and the Caribbean many times. After retirement, he took computer courses at Washtenaw Community College. He designed the Knitwits and Ann Arbor Garden Club websites and was their webmaster. Robert devoted countless volunteer hours tending the Cobblestone Farm herb garden.
He is survived by his brother, Richard A. Carter, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings William C. Carter, Ramona M. Clark, and Barbara J. Carter.
In accordance with Robert’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are scheduled at this time. He will be laid to rest with his parents at Hillsboro Cemetery, Henry Co., Iowa.
