Richard Earle Charlton, Jr., age 90, of Ann Arbor, Michigan died on Monday, January 2, 2023 at The University of Michigan Hospital. Cause of death was COVID pneumonia. Richard was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Clara J. Charlton and Richard E. Charlton Sr.
He received a BS from Johns Hopkins University, an MBA from The Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. from Michigan State University, all in accounting. He married Eleanor, whom he met when they were both professors at Ferris State University in 1961. They were married on August 4, 1962 and had recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. Richard taught at The Wharton School, and in Michigan at Eastern Michigan University, The University of Detroit, The University of Michigan, Wayne State University and Ferris State University. Richard loved music. He spent 14 years as an organist at Grace Lutheran in Baltimore, as well as other Baltimore churches. He directed a small choir at Wharton, and played guitar in small musical groups. He also enjoyed taking photos, especially slides, and in earlier days was rarely seen without his Kodak Retina camera. Richard enjoyed watching football, basketball, and baseball and was a big fan of the U of M, MSU, the Baltimore Colts and the Baltimore Ravens. He also begrudgingly watched Detroit Lions games with his kids.
