Phil Roddy, age 87, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2020, in his home surrounded by his four loving daughters after a brave battle with cancer. A first generation Irish American, Phil was born on January 16, 1933, to parents Francis and Barbara (Dougherty) Roddy in Wilmington, Delaware. He met and married the love of his life, Ann Moughan, on August 11, 1962.
Phil was a 1950 graduate from Salesianum High School, where he was an accomplished athlete in football, basketball, and track, and served as Sports Editor of the school newspaper. While attending St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was an alternate on the golf team and a huge supporter of the basketball team where he became an avid Hawks fan for life.
After graduating from St. Joe’s, Phil began a career with Chrysler Corporation as an Industrial Engineer. With Chrysler, he relocated to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he and Ann raised their four daughters. Always a supportive, loving father, he was very involved in his daughters’ lives and ingrained his love of sports in them. Based on a foundation of love, laughter and friendship, Phil and Ann had a beautiful marriage; they enjoyed playing golf and tennis together, and traveling with their wonderful circle of friends. After leaving Chrysler, Phil helped Ann grow their family business, Roddy Temporary Services, into an Inc. 500 ranked firm.
A lifelong fan of Michigan Wolverines and Saint Joe’s Hawks, Phil had a true passion for life. As a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Phil was a devout Catholic and very involved in the Ann Arbor community through the Southeast Kiwanis club. Phil made many lifelong friendships and celebrated important family milestones as a member of Georgetown Country Club, Travis Pointe Country Club and Ann Arbor Golf & Outing.
A true gentleman and a proud Irishman, Phil was a man of strong character. He had many friends and never shied from meeting people or having a good time. Together, he and Ann provided a beautiful and lively home where he relished in spending time with their children and grandchildren and his biggest priority was always his family.
Phil was preceded in death by his mother, his father and his wife. He is survived by his daughters Barbara, Mary Ann (Andy), Patti (Rick) and Jeanie; his grandchildren Brandon and Jason; Allison and Adam; Kaitlyn; and Alexander and Ann. He is also survived by his brother Francis (Joan) Roddy and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will take place at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on Saturday, February, 1, 2020, at 1:30 p.m., with visitation at 12:30 p.m. Internment will be at St. Thomas Cemetery immediately following services.
