O’Connell-Young, Patricia of Ann Arbor died suddenly at her home January 13, 2014. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held at the Muehlig Funeral Chapel on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. followed by a reception at the chapel. The family will greet friends’ beginning at 12 noon. Patricia was born in Chicago, IL the daughter of Joseph and Roslyn O’Connell. She graduated from the Academy of Our Lady in 1958. From 1967 through 1971 Patricia worked for The US Department of State Foreign Service Staff where she met her husband William “Bill” Young; sadly he preceded her in in death on July 13, 1994. She was an undergrad at George Washington University and went on to receive her Master’s Degree in East Asian Studies from the University of Michigan, graduating in 1991. During her studies she held multiple positions in the Department of Economics and Center for Chinese Studies as well as teaching English in China at three different universities. She retired after several years of service from the University of Michigan.
Patricia enjoyed academics, U of M sports, especially, football and hockey, she was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling throughout the world and the United States, but most of all enjoyed all the time she had with her grandchildren and family. Patricia was also very fond of feeding her friends the squirrels, in her back yard.
She is survived by her brother; Joseph (Cindy) O’Connell, step-sons; William Randall (Andrea) Young, David Winston Young, and Craig Wesley Young, grandchildren; Margaret and Benjamin, Diane (Brett) Damadio, William Robert and Michelle Theresa, great grandchildren; Simon and Drew. Special friends; the Binh family, the DeVarti family and many other special and distinctive friends.
Patricia was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and grandson; David Christopher Young.
In lieu of flowers donations may be offered to Veterans Helping Veterans & Others envelopes available at the funeral chapel.
