Mary Ellen Lloyd was born December 28th, 1954, in Detroit, Michigan, and passed away with her family by her side on February 13th, 2023. She was preceded in death by her father Richard, mother Linda, and brother Peter. She is survived by her husband, Andreas Blass, her ex-husband and friend, David Workman, her children, Christina (Alexander) Gelbard, Timothy (Abby) Blass, and Philip Blass, her brothers James and John Lloyd, and her sister Martha Johns. She leaves behind her joy and inspiration, her grandchildren Isa, Rhys, Ellie, and Grey Gelbard, and Adeline and Alden Blass. They will forever embrace the kindness, generosity, and artistry of their beloved "Emmy".
Mary Ellen’s keen intellect and deep compassion for the human condition prompted her nursing education at St. Clair County Community College, and many years of active practice. She was also a passionate artist, bringing her love of the natural world to life in beautiful watercolors. When lupus prevented her from working in clinical medicine, her attention to detail and great appreciation for the beauty of the world around her diverted her efforts to her graphic design business.
Mary Ellen was a servant of God and dedicated to her church. She had a heart capable of infinite compassion and unparalleled understanding. She was always willing to help those in need, and despite the ravages of a disease she battled for over 30 years, Mary Ellen was happiest when supporting friends and strangers alike.
She was a beacon of light in the lives of her family and friends. She loved every living thing she encountered and spent her life deeply connected to the world around her. She was passionate about animals, taking in stray cats and dogs (along with the rare raccoon), rescuing wildlife (even snakes and opossums), and supporting the noble work of the Humane Society.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 19th at Muehlig Funeral Chapel from 2:00pm - 6:00pm. Her funeral will be on Tuesday, February 21st at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 11:00am with visitation beginning at 10:00am. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to The Lupus Foundation of America or The Humane Society of the United States.
