Oakes, Marvin Joseph of Ann Arbor, Michigan died Saturday, September 17, 2016 he was 86 years old. Marvin was born in Obion, Tennessee on July 27, 1930, the son of Marion and Lucy Oakes. Marvin served in the Korean War in the 619th Ordnance Ammunition Co. He was honorably discharged on December 17, 1954. He received the U.S. Army United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal. He moved to Ypsilanti in 1956 and married Millie Hall on June 2, 1956 and together they made their home in Ann Arbor. Marvin worked for the University of Michigan for over 30 years retiring in 1992. He was a loving and devoted husband to Millie for 60 years. Marvin enjoyed fishing, country music, long walks and was an avid fan of U of M football. He was preceded in death by his parents and 9 brothers and sisters. He leaves behind his loving wife; Millie, goddaughter; Kirsten Sell, niece Debbie (Diuguie) Wiard, nephew; Dennis (Sherry) Beson, niece; Kathy (Tom) Neblett, sister in law; Jennie Draper and family, Louis (Vera) Beson and many other nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the Muehlig Funeral Chapel 403 South Fourth Ave., Ann Arbor. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of the service.
