Mark grew up in Winston-Salem North Carolina and began his career in his family’s business, Keaton’s Greenhouse, which his mother founded. After attending North Forsyth High School (class of 1964) Mark received an undergraduate degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (class of 1968), then attended graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served on the faculty of Michigan Technological University, after which he embarked upon a consulting career and moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan. Mark had an abiding interest in railroads, studying them in his spare time and including them in his academic research.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents Julia Marshall Keaton and Thomas C. Keaton Jr. Left behind to celebrate Mark’s life and accomplishments are cousins Debra Marshall, Ellen Nifong Sides, Lucinda Brodgen, Richard Nifong, Jane Wilcox and her husband David Wilcox and friend Ray Spillman.
