Beloved husband, father, and grandfather Eugene Joseph Schwartz died peacefully, well loved, and surrounded by his family. Eugene was born December 9, 1931 in New York City and grew up in the burrough of the Bronx. He met the love of his life Mary Natrella Schwartz, who lived one block away, at the age of 14 and they remained best friends for 74 years and husband and wife for 65 years.
Eugene was a well liked, gregarious man and made friends wherever he went. He was a lover of nature and found great enjoyment hiking and later walking for hours on end. He enjoyed visiting nurseries with his wife and choosing new trees and bushes to plant. He loved to share his sense of humor with all. He had perfect pitch and a real appreciation for music. He enjoyed driving and exploring new places, running errands and bringing his beloved dog to visit all his friends and all the other dogs and their people in his neighborhoods. His childhood summer family retreat on Pasquiset Pond in Charlestown, Rhode Island became his lifelong favorite place which he enjoyed and shared with his own family and extended family thus enriching several new generations with the wonders of the place in the woods that he loved.
Eugene earned a Bachelor's degree from City College of New York in mathematics, and a Masters degree from Columbia Teacher's College of New York in Psychology. He was very proud of his wife, a medical doctor, with two board certifications.
He owned a successful business in Manhattan for almost 50 years and lived in Scarsdale, New York for many of those years. He and Mary designed and built three houses together and retired to Ann Arbor, Michigan in 2000 to live with daughters Mare Saint and Serena Larson, son-in-law Greg Larson and granddaughters Bella and Ember Larson. He was loved and visited often by daughter Lory (Rob) Palmer of Pacific Palisades, CA to whom he passed on his love of animals. And will be missed by his son Nicholas of Oakland, CA , his sister Leane Steinhauer of Del Rey Beach, FL,, his sister in law Teresa Trano of LaGrangeville, NY and his nieces and nephews of New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Florida and Texas.
Deep, everlasting gratitude and love to his daughters, Mare and Serena, for their all encompassing, never waning care, love, and commitment to his life and well being.
