Bernard Ambrose Coyne of Ann Arbor and Brooklyn, MI died peacefully, surrounded by family on Saturday, January 23rd, 2016. He is survived by Dorothy Ann Coyne, his wife and best friend of over 60 years. He is also survived by their four children, Anne Marie (and Jerry) Schwiebert of Chelsea, MI; Clare (and Richard) Hylant of Toledo, OH; Julia (and Todd) Perry of College Place, WA; John Coyne of San Francisco, CA; and his grandchildren, Alex and Annika Schwiebert, and Andrea, Jack, and Courtney Hylant.
Born in Baltimore, MD in 1932, Bernie was educated at Loyola High School and attended Villanova University. He served as an officer in the Marine Corp. from 1955 to 1959. Afterwards, he achieved a Masters of Fine Arts at Catholic University, DC. In 1964, Bernie received his PhD in theater from Tulane University. Following graduation, Dr. Coyne accepted the chairmanship at the University of Toledo theater department, where he served proudly for 20 years. In 1983, Bernie began his training as a Rubenfeld Synergist. He practiced this healing work for 20 years.
In retirement, he and his wife purchased a lakeside home in Brooklyn, MI where they created a learning center. Over the years, hundreds of people have enjoyed workshops, yoga camps, and retreats at their home, which has come to be known as Sunnyside. Bernie was an artist, healer, and teacher who truly cared about people.
He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
