He was born March 23, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his wife Jeanne and is survived by a brother, Arnold and a sister, Diane. He attended Illinois Institute of Technology, graduating in 1952 with a BS in Chemistry. He then received a Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1956 at The University of Wisconsin. In 1957, he joined the Department of Chemistry at The University of Michigan where he taught for 43 years, retiring in 2000. While at Michigan, he was Associate Director for a number of years of the undergraduate Honors Program. His research interests were diverse; they included the study of high-energy reactions activated by nuclear processes, the conversion of water using nuclear energy to produce hydrogen as fuel, the analysis of human hair to assess possible effects of pollution during the last 100 years, and the non-destructive analysis of ancient and medieval coins and metallic art objects. Professor Gordus received two teaching awards from the University and, in 1973 received a Guggenheim Fellowship.
Adon’s family will hold a Funeral Service at 12:00 noon on Saturday, February 4th, 2023 at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 S. 4th Ave., Ann Arbor, MI 48104. Visitation at the Funeral Home will begin at 10:00am and continue until the time of service. Interment will take place at St. Thomas Cemetery following the Funeral Service.
