Wilma Thompson was born December 12th, 1933, and passed away Friday, March 21st, 2025, in Ankeny, Iowa at the age of 91. A visitation will be held March 29th from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Ankeny Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at 11:00 am. Interment to follow the services at Highland Memory Gardens.
Wilma lived in the Elkhart and Ankeny areas all her life. She graduated from White Oak High School in 1951 and after graduating, worked as a dental assistant for 6 years in the Highland Park area. Also, during this time, she met and married Dwayne Thompson of Elkhart on October 2nd, 1955. Dwayne and Wilma made their home in the Elkhart area, starting their family and raising their two daughters while farming there for 40 years.
She worked at one point for Enterprise Elevator, but the job she enjoyed most was being Dwayne’s #1 farm hand. She loved living on the farm and farm life. She helped in the field, drove the tractor, hauled grain, and at times helped with livestock. Through the years, Wilma enjoyed gardening, cooking, spending time with family, and playing cards, belonging to the Town & Country Club for many years. Wilma will be remembered as a one of a kind, special woman with a great sense of humor; always having a joke to tell. She was also known for her much requested mashed potatoes, and her one of a kind baked beans.
Later on in life, Wilma became a grandma. A role she enjoyed and cherished very much. She spent time attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and many school activities. She enjoyed traveling and watching sports. Wilma especially enjoyed following Iowa State Women’s Basketball and cheering on the Cyclones. Earlier in Wilma’s childhood, she was baptized in the Carney Fork River and most recently attended Marquisville Methodist Church. Wilma will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Wilma is survived by her children, Debbie (Dale) Sievers of Alleman, IA, and Diane (Tim) Grooters of Johnston, IA; She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Danielle (Blake) Whisenand of Ankeny, IA, Brad (Christina) Sievers of Kansas City, MO, Kim Sievers of Ankeny, IA, and Lindsay Utter of Des Moines, IA; five great-grandchildren, Landon, Xavier, and Colton Taff, and Abby and Ava Sievers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Agnas and Earl Spooner; her husband, Dwayne Thompson; sister and brother-in-law Mary and Darwin Boatwright; and brother and sister-in-law James and Betty Spooner.
