Sue Ann Mathis

Sue Ann Nowels Mathis, 73, of Elkhart, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at her home. Funeral services will be held at Ankeny Funeral Home, 1510 W 1st St, Ankeny, on Monday, July 29, 2013 at 10:30 AM with entombment to follow at Merle Hay Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, July 28, 2013 from 5-7 PM.

Sue was born on January 22, 1940 in Des Moines; the daughter of Robert and Norlaine Cowie Nowels. She attended school in Des Moines and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1957. Sue married Chip Mathis on September 5, 1964 in Ankeny. She was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed her boys and her grandchildren. Sue was an animal lover who also enjoyed gardening, painting, drawing and feeding the birds. She especially enjoyed her grandson, Trevor, playing pranks on her. Sue was a Chicago Bears fan and a fan of the Dodgers until they left Brooklyn.

Sue is survived by her husband, Chip, of Elkhart; sons, Chris (Amy) Mathis of Elkhart and Chad (Lisa) Mathis of Plano, TX; her grandchildren, Mackenzie Mathis of Ankeny and Trevor Mathis of Elkhart; a brother, Jerry Nowels of Slater; a sister, Dixie Nowels of Ankeny; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister, Janet Kay Nowels.
