Steven Lynn Kelling passed away on October 18, 2021. Steve was born on January 14, 1959 in Des Moines, Iowa and grew up in Ankeny, Iowa. He attended Ankeny High School and enlisted in the Army in 1976.
Steve was proud to have served his country in the military for 31 years. He served in the Army for 3 years as a Cavalry Scout and the Navy for 6 years as a Maintenance Technician. During his active enlisted service, Steve spent time in Texas and California before returning to his hometown where he worked as an electrician and served with the Army National Guard for over 20 years. He was honored with many awards over his career including the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Medal. Steve was especially proud of his work in the Detachment 1 365th Maintenance Company, where he served as Electronic Maintenance Chief. Steve retired from the Army National Guard in 2019.
Steve always had multiple projects going but was willing to lend a hand to help his loved ones since he could fix just about anything! His family and friends loved him dearly and will miss his laid-back manner that served as a calming presence for those around him. In addition to helping others and working with his hands, he loved fishing, collecting old coins, camping, and spending time with his family. Steve was especially proud of his 7 grandchildren - Anthony, Braeden, Caleb, Paloma, Kelsey, Jace, and Liam and loved to take them fishing.
Steve is survived by his mother, Donna Kelling; son, Christofer Kelling (Amy Hall); daughter, Misty Muñoz (Tony); daughter-in-law, Amber Kelling; seven grandchildren, sister, Karen Cross, and friend, Lori Frederick. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Kelling; and his son, Curtis Kelling.
A visitation for family and friends will be held at the Ankeny Funeral Home on Tuesday October 26, 2021 from 10:00AM to 11:30AM. A graveside service will follow at 12:30PM at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa.
