Russell B. Carlson, age 71, passed away Wednesday October 17, 2018, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston due to complications of Myelofibrosis (Leukemia). Visitation will be from 5-7:00 P.M., Monday, October 22, 2018, at Ankeny Funeral Home (1510 W. First St. Ankeny, IA 50023). Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M, Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at Westminster Presbyterian Church (4114 Allison Ave, Des Moines, IA 50310).
Russ was born September 28, 1947, in Fort Dodge, IA, to Russell and Margaret (Busby) Carlson. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with his Bachelor’s Degree in Education and went on to receive his Master’s Degree from UNI in Library Science. Russ worked as a library media specialist at Nevada High School until his retirement in 2003. He was united in marriage to Marilyn King in Des Moines, Ia on July 1, 1983.
Russ was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Des Moines. He and Marilyn also were members of various square dance clubs in the Des Moines area. He enjoyed reading and computers along with being an avid researcher at work and in his personal life.
Russ is survived by his wife, Marilyn; sister-in-law, Jeanette (Darwin) Copeman; nieces and nephews: Abby Copeman (Evan) Petig, Brady Copeman and Jaret (Anne) Copeman, along with several great nieces and great nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines.
