Nancy B. Bieghler Hiatt

Nancy B. Hiatt, 96, passed away, Thursday, October 21, 2010 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral Services will be at 11 AM, Saturday, October 23, 2010 at Elkhart Christian Church with visitation starting at 10 AM. Burial will follow services at Elkhart Cemetery.

Nancy was born April 11, 1914 to Walter and Elizabeth Bieghler in rural Polk County. She grew up in Elkhart and graduated from Elkhart High School in 1932. She married Gerald Hiatt on August 24, 1940. Nancy worked for Allied Mutual Insurance for 16 years and then became City Clerk for Elkhart. She was a faithful member of Elkhart Women’s Club, active in Christian Women’s Fellowship and she loved to read. She moved to The Rose of Ames in 2005.

Survivors include children, Mary Lee of Des Moines and Steven (Deirdre) Hiatt of San Francisco; grandchildren, Matthew Lee of Iowa City, Megan (Giles Bergel) Hiatt of Oxford, England, and Daniel (Susie Fong) Hiatt of San Francisco; and great-grandchildren, Russell Fong-Hiatt and Ada Bergel. Nancy is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald; sisters, Gladys Clark and Virginia McKee; and her cousin, Helen Brazelton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Mercy Hospice in Johnston or the Elkhart Christian Church.
