Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at the Ankeny Funeral Home, 1510 West First Street, Ankeny, Iowa 50023. The visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 27, 2023 at the funeral home. The burial following the service will be held at Ankeny Memorial Gardens.
He was a graduate of East High School Waterloo, Iowa and Gates Business College in Waterloo, Iowa. John met his wife of 59 years, Sandra Rae McNally, of rural Luana, Iowa while at Gates Business College. They were married on June 7th, 1964 at the Marian Lutheran Church in Gunder, Iowa.
John served 5 years in the regular U.S. Army. He served two tours of duty in Korea and one tour in Japan. He served 35 years in the reserve components. He worked as a full-time National Guard employee in positions of Unit Administrator, Battalion Operations Sergeant, and Unit Support Services Supervisor. John retired with 40 years in the military. His most enjoyable assignment was as First Sergeant of an Infantry Rifle Company located at Hampton and Iowa Falls, Company C 1st Battalion 133rd Infantry. John was a successful graduate of many U.S. Army schools, including the Airborne and Ranger schools.
John was a believer trusting Jesus’ death on the Cross as payment for his sins. He is survived by his wife, Sandy, his son, Chris (Susan), and his three granddaughters, Ireland, Elizabeth, and Kaylee. He is also survived by his brother, Vince (Lauretta), and his sister, Judy Bienfang, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Jonathan D. Cutler, his parents, John and Gladys, his sister, Carol (Leslie) Wroten, and brothers-in-law, Joseph Wynn and Gary Bienfang.
