Betty L Spooner

Betty was born August 13, 1925 in Cambridge, Iowa to Lawrence and Reatha Williams. She was one of seven children and graduated from White Oak High School in 1944. She then went to AIB college of Business in Des Moines, Iowa. Betty married James Spooner in Alleman, Iowa and they were soon blessed with four sons. They began their life together farming in Cambridge, Iowa. Betty and James moved their family to Ogden, Iowa and later settled on a farm in Greenfield, Iowa in 1968. Betty and James moved to Ankeny to be closer to their grandchildren in 1979. Betty worked for the Iowa Press Citizen and Scholastic Book Fairs. James and Betty enjoyed 63 years of marriage. With their love of travel, they visited all 50 states and 11 countries around the world, including 10 years on their Goldwing motorcycle. Together, they loved dancing and were avid sports fans, never missing one of their grandchildren’s sporting activities and Iowa State Women’s basketball games. Betty loved baking, hosting family get-togethers, playing cards and spending time with her sisters.

Betty is survived by her three children, Craig of Denison, IA, Dennis (Diane) of Spencer, IA, and Marty of Ankeny, IA; five grandchildren, Angela (Craig) Derby of Ankeny, IA, Jennifer (Mitch) Prashak of Ankeny, IA, Heather Vess of Mesquite, TX, Shelby (Matt) Seago of Maxwell, IA and K.C. (Katie) Spooner of Elkhart, IA; two step grandchildren, Amy Bidwell of Waukee, IA and Eric (Jill) Bidwell of Marshalltown, IA; thirteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Kenney, and sister-in-laws; Rose Williams and Wilma Thompson.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James, her parents, brothers, Dean and Don and sisters, Doris, Juanita, and Beverly, and her beloved son, Mark. Betty’s family wishes to express a heartfelt and special thank you to her care team who provided loving care at The Bridges at Ankeny.
