Thomas Patrick McIlwain, 59, of Boone, passed away from complications of cancer on March 29, 2010 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 2, at 10:30 a.m. at Stevens Memorial Chapel with Rev. Dr. Todd Jenks officiating. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Thomas McIlwain was born August 11, 1950 in Ames to Bazel and Vivian (Coy) McIlwain. He graduated from Ames High School in 1968. He attended Iowa State University and Boone Jr. College. He married Brenda Santi on September 23, 1995.
Tom was employed by K-Mart in Ames for a number of years before owning the Boone Laundramat. He recently owned the Furniture Zone in Boone.
He was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs. He coached softball for many of his daughter’s teams. He enjoyed the outdoors. He loved his dogs, Jasmine, Charlie, Starr, and Duncan.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda McIlwain of Boone; daughter, Samantha McIlwain of Boone; son, Jeff (Leah) Mitchell of Seattle, WA; brother, Jack (Ursula) McIlwain of Boone; sister Marguerite (Dennis) Block of Des Moines; and several other loving family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and a sister, Kathleen McIlwain.
