Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 2210 Lincoln Way, Ames, Iowa on Friday, August 18, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. Visitation will be held at 9 am until the time of the service at the church. Private Family Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Remsen, Iowa.
Jeannette was born on August 11th, 1933 in Ryan, Iowa, the daughter of Harry Vincent and Mary Grace (Fleming) Sullivan. She graduated from St. John’s High School in Ryan, Iowa in 1949. She graduated from Mount Mercy Junior College with her Associate Degree in 1951 and continued her education at Clark College where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree graduating in 1953. She graduated from Iowa State with her Master’s Degree in Science in 1956. She was united in marriage to Dr. Virgil Edward Bohnenkamp, DVM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ryan, Iowa in 1957. There were three children to this union, Rob, Carol and Phil.
Jeannette was an Associate Professor Emeritus of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Iowa State University. Her special interests were cooking, gardening, traveling, playing bridge, but most of all she dearly loved spending time with her family. She was an active member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church Parish in Ames and Parish and served on the Wine and Wisdom Committee that plans adult education events. She had a strong faith and enjoyed being with her church family. She was a long-time member of Amnesty International, American Civil Liberties Union, and Story County Community Housing Corp. She was member of the Ames League of Women Voters since 1982, and received the 2011 Carrie Chapman Catt Award. In the local League, she served as observer corps chair, co-president-elect, co-president (2004-2006), and co-meeting planner. Jeannette was elected to two terms on the Iowa LWV Board of Directors (1999-2003).
Jeannette was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Virgil Edward Bohnenkamp; her parents; brother, Harold Sullivan and sister, Virginia Lucas. She is survived by her three children, Rob (Linda) Bohnenkamp of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Carol Bohnenkamp of Piedmont, California and Phil Bohnenkamp of Ames, Iowa; three grandchildren, Heidi (Piera Calabro) Bohnenkamp of Brooklyn, New York, Amy Bohnenkamp of Astoria, New York and Laura Gerhardt of Washington, DC; sister, Mary (Dave) Sanders of New Albany, Indiana, and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church or a charity of your choosing in loving memory of Jeannette.
