In the Air Force, he served as a radar operator at Erding Air Base in Freising, Germany during the early days of the Cold War. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in September of 1954 while serving at Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City, SD. While in the Air Force he earned college credit from the University of Maryland. Lloyd graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1957. Following graduation he worked briefly in Freeport, Il before returning to the University of Iowa to begin work on a Master of Business Administration. This led to their engagement in December of 1959 and their marriage on July 2, 1960, in Rochester, MN.
Following their marriage, Lloyd and Kathy moved to the Cedar Rapids area where he worked for a brokerage and Kathy taught elementary school. In December 1965, Lloyd began a job at the Center for Industrial Research and Services (CIRAS), part of Iowa State University Extension. While working at CIRAS, Lloyd completed his Master of Business Administration at Drake University in 1971.
