Dolores Jeanette Byriel, 91, passed Thursday, Oct 10th, 2024 at Israel Family Hospice House surrounded by her family. Dolores was born June 6th, 1933 in Omaha, Nebraska to Jens Peter and Pauline Margrethe Nielsen Ploughman. She grew up in Omaha and graduated from high school in Audubon, Iowa.
On August 11th, 1951, Dolores was united in marriage to Harvey James Byriel at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In the fall of 1951 Harvey enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and began serving his country in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where they began their family. Following Harvey’s military service of two years they made their permanent home in Ames and were blessed with 7 children: Jeani, Connie, Shari, Peggy, Patti, Jim, and Julie.
Together, Harvey and Dolores richly invested in their family and friends, worked hard, and enjoyed laughter and the simple things of life. Their grandchildren were their delight!
In addition to supporting Harvey in the family business, Byriel Construction, Dolores also engaged in the community, serving the Ames School District as an educational aide for children with behavioral disorders, supporting young girls to attend camp through TTT, and using her amazing cooking and baking skills for events throughout the community with an annual highlight of Bethesda’s Scandinavian Coffee. She was famous for her tea rings!
After their retirement, Harvey and Dolores wintered in Florida at Dora Canal, enjoying old friendships and growing new ones.
Dolores cherished her family and loved people. No one was a stranger, and she was loved by all who knew her. Everyone was a friend and invited to the dinner table …and breakfast …and lunch. The coffee pot was always on.
Dolores will be deeply missed by her children and grandchildren, Jeani (Mike) Lee with children Jackie and Jen, Connie (Phil) Miller with children Andy, Dan, Jane and Joe, Shari (John) Paule with children Jessica and Austin, Peggy (Doug) Wierson with children Hank and Ted, Patti Byriel, Jim (Carol) Byriel with children Brett and Kelli, and Julie (Zach) Allen with children Josiah, Acacia, Isaac, and Kiah along with her 28 great-grandchildren and so many dear friends.
