William J. “Bill” Swinney, 74 of Amarillo passed away October 1, 2013. Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 7, 2013 at Lamount Drive Baptist Church with Atlee Runyan officiating. Arrangements are by Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 S. Bell. Bill was born December 27, 1938 in Boonville, Missouri to Harold and Anna Swinney. He was raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After graduating from high school, he served two years in the U.S. Army. On September 24, 1960 Bill married Linda Jackson. He worked in the grocery business for many years and was well known in that industry throughout the Texas Panhandle until his retirement in 1999. Bill loved watching sports and hanging out with Linda. He also enjoyed relaxing with his buddies drinking coffee. Bill was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother and grandfather and he will be greatly missed. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Linda Swinney; and a brother, Don Swinney. Bill is survived by his sons, Jeff Swinney and wife Kami of Ft. Worth and Greg Swinney and wife Tammy of Hurst; brother, Verle Swinney and wife Dottie of San Jose, California; sister, Virginia Cordova and husband Art of Albuquerque, New Mexico; also by his grandchildren, Bailey, Ryan, Lauren, Audrey, Will and Jake Swinney. The family suggests memorials be sent in lieu of flowers to the American Cancer Society.
