She leaves children Tulley and Susan Brown of Amarillo, Texas, Hobey and Sharon Brown of Amarillo, Texas, and Jamie and Mark Barnhardt of Riverside, California; grandchildren Brad Brown of Amarillo, Texas, Corey and Whitney Brown of Elgin, Oklahoma, Jacob and Haydee Brown of Amarillo, Texas and Dr. Jody Barnhardt of Riverside, California. She also leaves three great-granddaughters Carley, Kyndal and Lilly Brown; one beloved younger sister Colleen and her husband Jim Chase; her dear sister-in-law Virginia Jones, and her best friend whom she loved like a sister, Norma Dement.
She was preceded in death by her husband James, her parents, two brothers, Thomas Jones and D.L. Jones, and four sisters Rene Simpson, Virginia Smith, Shirley Ward and Beth Layman.
Vesta was born on May 23, 1937 at home in Collingsworth County, Texas, the fifth of eight children of William and Nora Jones. Vesta’s family moved to Amarillo, Texas when she was six years old. She attended Amarillo public schools and graduated from Palo Duro High School.
Vesta married James Brown in 1957 in Amarillo, Texas. They lived in Amarillo most of their married life except for seven years in the Washington, D.C. area. Vesta was a mother of three, homemaker, and member of Southwest Church of Christ.
In her life, Vesta excelled at numerous artistic endeavors including oil and water painting, quilting, and furniture refurbishment. She enjoyed cooking, cheering for the Dallas Cowboys, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods, and playing any competitive board, card, lawn, dice or table tennis game.
A funeral service for Vesta will be held Saturday, November 19, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Griggs Schooler Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St., Amarillo, Texas 79109. A reception will be held at the Southwest Church of Christ at 4515 Cornell St. following the funeral service.
Serving as honorary pallbearers are Brad Brown, Corey Brown, Jacob Brown, Jody Barnhardt, Whitney Brown and Haydee Brown.
