Truett Cargill grew up in Plainview, Texas and attended Plainview High School where he played football. He met his future wife, Opal Loretta Cargill, when he was the waiter at a café in Plainview. He asked her and her friend what they would like to order and she replied, “I believe I’ll take the waiter.” Truett was married to the love of his life for 64 years before her passing in 2008. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, during World War II, under General George S. Patton. After the war, he and his wife relocated to Amarillo. In 1958, after working for several years at Tri State Sign Company, he started his own business. Color Ad Sign Company became one of the largest and most successful sign manufacturing companies in the tri-state area where he was well known as a very giving and fair businessman. Truett eventually retired and sold the company, taking up golf as a new pastime. He was an avid bowler and bowled on many league teams throughout the years. He was a member of the Palo Duro Masonic Lodge 1239 and was also involved in the Scottish Rite and Khiva Shrine in Amarillo. He was very engaged in the community and gave much of his time as a member of the Downtown Lions Club. He and his wife were charter members of Paramount Baptist Church. Truett’s family was his greatest priority. He coached his sons in Kids Inc. football, basketball and track. He was a solid bird hunter and could spend days fresh water fishing with his family members or anyone else he could talk into going out on the lake. He also enjoyed taking his family on vacations and spent many summers on his boat teaching his children to waterski. He doted on his grandchildren and great grandchildren, with guaranteed Saturday morning trips to McDonalds for “hotcakes”. Truett was a courageous, giving man, husband, father, grandfather and employer who lived life to the fullest and will be missed by all whose lives he touched.
Truett is survived by his daughter Susan Taylor and husband Jim of Amarillo; his son Johnny and wife Karol of Spring, Texas along with 12 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. sister, Betty Davis of Amarillo sister, Luciille Settle of Amarillo, and sister, Ida Mae Sease of Victoria, Texas .
