Nelda “Sue” Rankin, age 90, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2025, in Amarillo, Texas. She was born on December 28, 1934, to Inez and Weldon Tomberlin in Amarillo, and spent her life rooted in the community she loved. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1953 and married the love of her life C.L. “Chuck” Rankin in 1964.
A graveside service to honor Sue’s life will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at Memorial Park Cemetery located at 6969 E. Interstate 40 in Amarillo, Texas.
A woman of deep faith, Sue believed that everyone was meant to be loved and loved on! Her welcoming spirit touched all who knew her. Whether through a kind word, a warm smile, or a thoughtfully chosen gift, she made others feel loved and valued.
Sue began her professional journey in the mortgage lending industry in 1961. Over her 34-year career, she held numerous roles including loan processor, underwriter, lender, and branch manager. Her dedication and work ethic earned her respect throughout the field. In addition to her career in finance, Sue and her husband Chuck shared a passion for creativity and entrepreneurship. Together they owned and operated Ceramics by You for more than five years – a venture that brought joy to many and reflected their shared love of craftsmanship.
Sue was preceded in death by her devoted husband Chuck Rankin; a son, Robert M. Hughes, Jr.; her parents; and her brother Huel Leon Tomberlin.
Sue was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her legacy continues through her children: daughters Denice Haley and husband Stan, Ginger Hilbert and husband Trey; son Charles Lancer Rankin – all of Amarillo. Sue’s memory also lives on through her grandchildren: Charlotte Mullican and husband Josh; Eric Haley and wife Tashi of Amarillo; Stephen Hilbert and wife HaliAnne of Richland, Washington; Samantha Hilbert-Brooks and husband Taylor of Howell, Michigan. She was blessed with four great-grandchildren: Layla, Boone, and Liza Haley; and Haley Mullican; and cherished family friends, Mary Sue Stephens, Frank and Lori Britto of Amarillo, Jana Boatman of Groom, Louise Rogers of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Dawn and Nicholas Weight of Grand Junction, Colorado.
The family suggests memorials be made to Meals on Wheels of Amarillo at 7550 Outlook Dr. Amarillo, TX 79106.
