Ruby "Fay" Newton

Ruby Fay Newton of Amarillo died Wednesday, June 28, 2017. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Pioneer Chapel with Kyle Pope officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are by Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 S. Bell St.

Ms. Ruby Fay Newton (Fay), member of Olsen Park Church of Christ, passed peacefully in her home with her family on Wednesday, June 28th. Preceded by her loving husband Grady Raymond Newton, and her eldest daughter Barbara Ann Newton, she is also survived by her brother and sister, Howard Bryan and Pat Pond; youngest daughter Carolyn McCurdy; grandchildren Tammy Sanford, Steven D’Andrea, David D’Andrea, and Cari Darner; eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. The respective spouses and families count Fay as their own and will miss her as well.

Ms. Newton was truly a joy to all who knew her. With a remarkable wit and a dynamite smile she lived independently for 90 of her 91 years, and made everything she did look easy, no matter her age. She was a trained nurse, after graduating from Paris High School in 1942, though she later chose to focus on raising her two daughters. Being a skilled and dedicated homemaker, her and her husband grew their own food for five decades, and hosted many a fabulous meal for the family gatherings. They lived in various beautiful places due to Grady’s work, but lived most of their lives together in Boise, Idaho, until moving to Amarillo in 1989 to be with Fay’s family.

Fay’s favorite pastime was playing the domino game, Mexican Train, and she would play for hours into the night if anyone would let her. She laughed freely and fully with family and friends, telling entertaining stories of all kinds, and she loved talking about God and the importance of living a good life. She was a good woman who led a good life indeed. Her presence is dearly missed.
