Roger Ellsworth Gibson, aged 77, passed away on October 26, 2024, in Amarillo, Texas. Born on June 9, 1947, Roger lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his country, and his community. Roger honorably served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, stationed aboard the U.S.S. Constellation CVA-64, an experience that shaped much of his early life. Following his military service, he embarked on a career that included roles at Darrouzett ISD, where he worked from 1986 until his retirement in 2000, and Booker ISD from 1983 to 1985. He also worked at the Transportation Test Track in Pueblo, Colorado, from 1980 to 1983. Beyond his professional endeavors, Roger was deeply committed to his community in Darrouzett, serving as both a volunteer firefighter captain and an EMS driver.
Roger's educational journey included graduating from Trinidad High School in Trinidad, Colorado, followed by further studies at Amarillo College. His passion for learning continued throughout his life, particularly through reading historical books, articles and taking many trips to the library in Amarillo.
A true outdoorsman, Roger cherished the fall and spring seasons when he could hunt dove, quail, pheasant, turkey, and deer. Not to mention fishing, he loved casting a line, especially for trout, whenever he could. His love for woodworking allowed him to create unique pieces of furniture and art, showcasing his skillful hands.
A devoted sports fan, Roger spent many hours cheering on his grandchildren at their sports activities and never missed a chance to support his beloved Dallas Cowboys, despite the disappointment from them over the years. One of Roger’s greatest abilities was his ability to tell a story, stories about war, historical events, westerns, even the weather and his favorite Dallas Cowboys memories. You might hear the same story a dozen times, but he told them all like it was the first time he had ever told it. He absolutely loved telling them to his grandkids.
Roger is lovingly remembered by his wife of 45 years, Shannon, and their sons, Olin (Michele) of Amarillo, Texas, and Dallas (Andrea) of Land O Lakes, Florida. He was a proud grandfather to Mason, Jaydan, and Tatum of Amarillo, and Madalyn and Kodey of Land O Lakes. He also leaves behind his siblings, Pat Swope of Winfield, Kansas, Arch "Skip" Gibson (Carolyn) of El Reno, Oklahoma, Becki Gibson of Winfield, Kansas, and Ron Gibson of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Arch and Rosetta Gibson, his brother Rick Gibson, and his son Chip Gibson.
“Fair Winds & Following Seas, to an old Sailor...”
