Peggy was born in Miami, Oklahoma to Sylvia Hester Waugh and William Hugh Montgomery. Her father was a welder and travelled to several states for work with the family in tow. Peggy’s family moved from Missouri to Kansas to Texas and several places in between. She was always quick to make friends and take care of her younger brothers.
Upon a visit to Tulia, Texas, Peggy met the love her life, Arthur. She always reminisced that her hair was in pig tails the first time Arthur saw her. Arthur had served in the Korean War and had been recently honorably discharged. Moving back to the States, Arthur was helping with the family farm in Tulia. Arthur and Peggy became fast friends. After Peggy returned to her parent’s home, she and Arthur started corresponding with handwritten letters (complete with three cent stamps) that the family still treasures. Arthur’s persuasive letters convinced Peggy to start a life with him. They were married September 19, 1953.
Peggy and Arthur moved to Amarillo and began their journey together. Along the way, they had five children. As the children grew and became independent, Peggy returned to college to pursue a career in Medical Records. She worked for Northwest Texas Hospital for several years and retired in 1991. Sadly, Arthur passed away in 1991.
After Peggy retired, she belonged to the Red Hat Society, the Second Baptist Church and Tops group. Her hobbies were sewing, crafting, cooking and baking. She made many friends along the way and the family sincerely appreciates all the help that Melva Young provided. She was a member of Senior Citizens Club of River Road/Pleasant Valley and TOPS #283.
Peggy is survived by Cynthia, Beth, Garry and spouse Jackie, five grandchildren, Nicole and spouse David, Oriana, Amber and spouse Bull, Preston and Presley. She is also survived by three great grandchildren, Raevyn, Syris, and Alyna.
Peggy is preceded in death by her husband Arthur, her sons Owen and Howard, her parents Sylvia and Hugh Montgomery, and brother Willis Montgomery.
