Lacye Donell Comer was born June 27, 1952 in Cleburne, TX to Bessie Beck and Lacy Comer. Lacye passed from this earth on Saturday, January 6, 2024, in Amarillo, TX. He was 71 years old. He was known by many nicknames, Donnie, Skeeterbite and Dudley.
First there was his dad Lacy Comer, then Lacye Comer the son, then Lacye put the name Laci back on his daughter where he thought it belonged. Three generations of a version of Lacye!
He grew up in Canyon and playing baseball with his 3 brothers and he later umpired baseball. He always told Diane every time they passed a ballfield on Hwy 87,” I played there and I umpired there”.
He served in the US Army in Germany and Amarillo, TX. While in Germany he enjoyed touring around Europe with good friends then came back to Amarillo. He went to work as a gravel hauler for Charles Baldwin and Baldwin trucking then moved to a long haul driver and then dispatch. Then Dudley Baldwin created Baldwin Transport for long haul trucking where Lacye went into dispatch at Baldwin Transport. He was subsequently head of dispatch and Dudley Baldwin called him his right hand man. He dedicated 47 year of his working life to Baldwin. Diane created a wall full of his trucking achievement award plaques. Every spring they enjoyed driving north to look at the mesquite to see if they were budding yet. If the mesquite budded then winter was over cause truckers don’t love winter. He truly loved his trucking family.
Lacye enjoyed being there for his daughter Lacis’ time in the Palo Duro High School band. He was awarded a top band supporter plaque for always helping out.
After semiretirement he worked for Baldwin and H.T. bar Trucking to be able to spend more time to be able to spend time playing “42” domino tournaments. Many tournaments were held in small towns during festivals and one of his favorite memories was playing in an all womens festival where he dressed up like a lady. He also enjoyed playing in Canyon and teaching WT students to play “42”. He enjoyed traveling with Diane all over the state and participating in 42 tournaments everywhere he could and won many “42” awards. He had quite the “42” domino trophy collection. He also enjoyed looking for beautiful bluebonnet fields in central Texas. He secretly liked that as much as Diane did.
Lacye was a hugh Dallas Cowboy fan but called them his Cowgirls when they lost. He really enjoyed the Texas Rangers and attended many a Ranger game and had a collection of Ranger hats, some from his dad. Actually he had collected many different hats and almost always had some hat on his head.
