Joe Roy Grimes was born September 14, 1927 in Portales, New Mexico to Cortez and Anna Grimes. He married Marie McCatherine in 1950, and she was the love of his life. They started their family in Portales, and eventually settled in Amarillo. Mr.Grimes was a hardworking man, having driven a truck for Baldwin, Dwight Cheek Trucking Company, and a few others, well over a million miles during his course of about 55 years, and ran Joe’s Gulf Service Station for a short time.
Mr. Grimes adored his children, but his grandchildren were his pride and joy. He never met a claw machine he didn’t like, and always returned from his long-haul trips with a little surprise for the grandkids. His favorite pastime was watching Western movies that he’d seen so many times he probably knew them word for word. He was the kind of man who would give the pearl snap shirt off his back to anyone in need, never expecting anything in return, and was just the right amount of sweet and ornery, with a little humor mixed in. He was dearly loved, and will be missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife, Marie; a son, Gary; a daughter, Jolene; a granddaughter, Misty; three sisters, and two brothers.
Left to cherish his memory are his sons Terry Grimes of Amarillo, and Les Grimes and wife Kathy of Coweta, Oklahoma; his grandchildren, Cindy Moody and husband Buster, Jonathan Grimes, Bethany Nelson, Vernetta Shirley, Skyler Grimes, four great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.
