Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, March 25, 2022 at Amarillo Church of Christ, 9999 S. Western, with Paul Wyly officiating. Burial will take place at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, March 25, 2022 at Western Park Cemetery in Hereford, TX. The family will receive friends Thursday March 24, 2022 from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M. at Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, located at 5400 Bell St. Amarillo, TX.
He was born March 23, 1944 to Richard and Lillie Mae Perkins. He was a school teacher for 53 years, and began his career in Lubbock in the late 1960’s. In 1973 he began teaching Math in Hereford at Stanton Jr. High. In 1979 began teaching Chemistry and Physics at Hereford High School, where he taught until his retirement in 2020. He was a faculty sponsor for the National Honor Society for many years, as well sponsoring Academic Decathlon. From 1986 to 1989, he sponsored a Summer Track Program in Hereford. He loved following Hereford Athletic events and filmed countless events for many years. The highlight of every school year was attending the UIL State Track Meet held in Austin – this was his ‘Superbowl’ that he attended from around 1987 until 2019. He was a longtime member of the Park Avenue Church of Christ in Hereford. He loved spending time with his kids and grandkids, and was an avid woodworker, building numerous furniture projects over the years.
He is survived by two sons: Coby Perkins and wife Brenda, of Amarillo, and Brooke Perkins and wife Angela, of Little Elm; three grandchildren, Sidney, Micah, and Wyatt Perkins, of Amarillo, two brothers, Bobby Perkins and wife Dianne, of Bushland, and Billy Perkins, of Cisco; four sisters, Alisa Trimmell and Fiance Brent Riethmayer, of Amarillo, Angela Novak, of Lake City, FL, Anita White and husband Larry, of Lubbock, and Linda Pate, of Amarillo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Lillie Mae Perkins, and his wife, Anita Dianne Perkins.
In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations be made to the James Perkins Memorial Fund at Happy State Bank. The proceeds of the Memorial will benefit graduates at Hereford High School.
