J.R. was born July 7, 1919, in Hedley. He served in the U.S. Army 96th Infantry Division, during this time he fought in the battle of Okinawa on Easter Sunday 1945. He Married Geneveive Tanner in September 1939.
J.R. loved to dance and go to VFW sanctions. J.R. loved his family and his grandkids, with whom he enjoyed spending time. He spent decades in the automotive business in Amarillo, he retired from the City of Amarillo in 1985, after many years in the parts department.
He was preceded in death by a son, Dan, in 1988; his wife, Gen, in 1995; and a great-great-grandson, Isaac B. Hilleray, in 2010.
Survivors include three sons, David and wife Pat of Weatherford, Phill and wife Diane of Flower Mound and Ray and wife Diane of Longview; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
