Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Second Baptist Church of Amarillo with the Rev. Wayne Griffin officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40.
Gary was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was a born-again Christian who received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Gary loved serving the Lord and was a willing and eager witness. He was active at Second Baptist Church. He was a deacon, part of the Praise Team, a member of the Keen Age Khoir and The Good News Bearers. Gary had previously served as a deacon at Buchanan Street Chapel. His ministry included prison work, helping the unemployed find jobs and interviewing skills, and praising the Lord through his gift and love of music.
Gary proudly served his country for 22 years in the U.S. Navy. He worked 15 years for Northwest Texas Hospital and 10 years for the city of Amarillo.
Gary served as president of the Yellow Rose Chapter of the NEHA. He was also honored to be a "Good Guy" recipient for the Top of Texas Chapter of the American Business Women's Association. He also previously served as chairman of the board for Boy Scout Troop No. 62 for several years.
Gary's greatest joys were spending time with his beloved family and precious granddaughter and singing praises to the Lord.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Virginia Ann Wasson; a daughter, Ann Kathleen Willburn of Amarillo; a son, Gary Michael Wasson of Plano; a granddaughter, Christina Ann-Marie Willburn of Amarillo; a sister, Linda Young of Amarillo; a loving extended family; and many good friends and neighbors.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be to Second Baptist Church, 419 N. Buchanan St., Amarillo, TX 79107-5377.
