Mr. Jones was born Jan. 2, 1916, in Memphis to Wilber and Tishie Jones. He graduated in 1933 at Memphis High School. He worked for the Farmers Union Grocery, then for Wapple Platter Wholesale Grocery. He was drafted into the U.S. Army 35th Engineer Combat Battalion June 13, 1941. Serving 18 months, he helped break through the almost impossible terrain for the 600-mile Alaskan Highway from Fort Nelson, Canada, to White Horn, Canada. He also served in Europe, from Northern France, missing D-Day by two weeks, to the Rhine River.
Mr. Jones returned to Lubbock after being discharged on Sept 25, 1945. He married MayDelle Butlar on Sept. 30, 1945, to whom he was married for 62 years. She preceded him in death on Jan. 26, 2007. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service and The American Quarter Horse Association. Edward was a member of Comanche Trail Church of Christ, where he served as an Elder.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers; two sisters; and a great-granddaughter.
Survivors include a brother, Rayburn Jones of Birmingham, Ala.; two daughters, Ethel Melendy and husband Doug of Aledo and Nola Crawford and husband Steve of Amarillo; two sons, Ed Jones and wife Norma of Lubbock and Wilber Jones and wife Judy of Clovis, N.M.; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
