Charles L. Smith, 88 of Amarillo passed away October 11, 2016. Funeral service will be Monday, October 17, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Griggs Schooler Gordon Pioneer Chapel with Chaplain Stuart Smith officiating. Services are under the direction of Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 S. Bell. Charles was born November 10, 1927 in Stevens, Arkansas to Frank and Bessie Smith. He moved to Memphis, Texas as a child and later to Amarillo. Charles married Irene Umbaugh on March 31, 1956 in Clovis, New Mexico. He enjoyed working in the yard, playing with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and loved family gatherings. Charles worked for Texaco Refinery in Amarillo for 34 years and also served in the military. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife Irene Smith of Amarillo; daughter, Carolyn Elston and husband Garry of Whitharral, Texas; son, Eddie Smith and wife Stephanie of Amarillo; three grandchildren, Jerry Elston and wife Tracie of Hobbs, New Mexico, Mendy Watkins of Clovis, New Mexico and Peyton Smith of Amarillo; four great-grandchildren, Brooke Watkins and boyfriend Aric Robbins of Amarillo, Kelcee Elston of Hobbs, New Mexico, Reece Watkins of Clovis, New Mexico and Addison Elston of Hobbs, New Mexico; a great-great-grandchild Presley Robbins of Amarillo; two very special four-legged companions, Cricket and Marley; also by two sisters and a brother. The family requests in lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Charles L. Smith.
