The family lived in Canyon during her elementary years where she attended grade school at the West Texas Teacher’s College now known as West Texas A&M University. She moved to Amarillo in 1932 at the age of 13.
She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1937 and married James Louis “J.L.” McCarty in 1939.
She also attended Draughan’s Business School.
Lorene was a homemaker and did beautiful handwork.
She loved gardening and had beautiful gardens.
She attended 50-50 Sunday school class at Polk St. United Methodist Church where she was a member for 84 years.
Lorene delivered Meals on Wheels for 33 years and was still volunteering at the time of her death.
She was the Rock of her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Louis “J.L.” McCarty in 1991; her son, Dr. James McCarty in 1993;
grandson, Kent Johnson in 2008; her siblings, Harry Wood, Frank Wood, Ed Wood, Doug Wood, Rose Johns, Delpha Downing
and also several beloved nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Johnson and husband Don of Amarillo; son, Kevin McCarty and wife Lynda of Amarillo;
granddaughters, Paige Denison and husband Rickie of Amarillo and Susan Johnson of Canyon;
grandsons, Steve McCarty and wife Kim of Amarillo, Keith McCarty and wife Kim of Allen,
Tyler McCarty and wife Anne and Neal McCarty and wife Erin both of Ft. Worth;
great-grandchildren, Sean Johnson, Meredith McCarty, James Johnson, Caroline McCarty, Shlay Denison,
Jackson Rosales, Nick Sandlin, Jett McCarty and Kate McCarty; also by many nieces and nephews.
