He was born December 24, 1923 in Harrietsville, OH, a son of Wales and Cora Mallett. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers, Riley, James Argel, Cecil and Hubert. Two sisters, Bernice Gilreath and Gladys Bergmann.
He graduated from Elk Rural High School in 1942 where he was one of the star players of his basketball team. He served his country in the Army as a corporal in the European theater during WWII. Upon his discharge he was employed by Humes Trailer Shop in Steubenville, OH while also building homes, owned and managed rental properties before becoming owner of Mallett’s Hardware in Wintersville, OH. After many years, he closed the hardware store and went to work as a welder/mechanic at Egypt Valley mine working on various shovels, including the world famous Gem of Egypt. He retired as weighmaster at Consolidated Coal Co.
He was a member of Labelle View Church of Christ where he served as a deacon, member of the Lions Club, Jefferson Sportsman Club, and lifetime member of the VFW Post 8207.
Ivan enjoyed most spending time with all of his family in addition to skeet shooting, bowling leagues, coin collecting, playing cards (especially Euchre), horseshoes, billiards, darts, gardening, and loved watching Ohio State Buckeyes football and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Thelma M. (Nichols) Mallett, whom he married December 24, 1948; Violet Pierce, who he considered a sister; a son, Larry Mallett of Casselberry, FL; three daughters, Barbara (John) Costa Longwood, FL, Pat (Frank) House Longwood, FL, Lisa (Scott) Schaffer Lawrenceville, GA, nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home 994 E. Altamonte Drive, Altamonte Springs, FL 32701 on Thurs Sept 7 from 5-8pm and funeral service at 12pm Friday Sept 8. Interment will follow at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery, Mims, FL.
