Freeda received Christ as a young girl and loved serving in the ministry. She was known to many as a Bible teacher, author, prayer warrior and encourager. In her professional vocation she became co-founder of SuperChannel Worship Ministries in 1978, a Christian broadcast television station in Orlando, Florida.
Born December 27, 1946 in the small town of Bonifay, Florida, Freeda grew up on a family farm in a little village called Bethlehem just outside of Bonifay. She married her high school sweetheart, Claud Bowers, four days after high school graduation (Freeda was the salutatorian) and always loved to learn. She was 17 and he was 20; they were married over 58 years.
After some time in Tallahassee and with the birth of their first child Angela, the young family moved to central Florida in the mid-1960s. With the birth of their son Victor (born on her birthday, December 27) in 1969, the young family moved again, choosing Leesburg, Florida as their home.
After both of her children graduated from university (UCF), Freeda said “I’m going to college too!” and enrolled in Bible college. Freeda graduated from Zoe Bible College of Jacksonville, Florida, earning a BA degree in Divinity. Later, as an ordained minister, Freeda was awarded an honorary doctorate degree for lifetime service of ministry.
Her legacy is best known as a woman of kindness, encouragement and prayer. Freeda loved and cared for every person she met. Never forgetting to remember her widow friends on Valentine’s Day, and even running after the mailman to give him his Christmas present, her thoughtful, generous and spontaneous gestures knew no limits.
Freeda initiated a prayer group called S.O.A.R. in 2000. Meeting weekly at the TV station on Tuesdays 7am, S.O.A.R. prayed for the USA, the nation of Israel, the SuperChannel, and whoever and whatever else the Holy Spirit might inspire.
Freeda authored many books, her best known being her semi-autobiographical journey of prayer entitled “Give Me 40 Days”. Through the years thousands have gone on that same 40-day devotional journey with wonderful testimonies from around the world. Freeda traveled extensively to many nations to preach and share her 40-day testimony, most notably Russia, China, South America, and Ukraine.
For approximately five years Freeda was overseer of the state of Florida representing Daughters for Zion, a prayer arm of CUFI (Christians United for Israel), an organization founded by Dr. John Hagee. Freeda loved helping people know Christ more intimately.
Known as an amazing southern cook, Freeda was warm and hospitable to all. She is survived by her husband Claud, their daughter Angela and son Victor, grandson Michael, sisters Sharon Johnson and Javetta Saunders, brother Frank McWaters, brothers and a sister-in-law, numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and extended family in the southeast and also Scotland, UK.
As Freeda trusted Jesus in life, we take comfort in knowing she is with her Lord now and forevermore.
