Edward George Izbicky, 95, died peacefully at his home in Lake Mary, FL on February 2. Born on February 9, 1927, in Punxsutawney, PA, Ed grew up in Chicago, IL. He has called Central Florida home for many years and resided in Casselberry until he moved to the Oakmonte retirement community in 2016, where he was active and made many new and treasured friends. Skip, a childhood nickname, always had a story to tell and a smile on his face.
As a young man, he joined the army to begin his military career. He served the United States military honorably, both in the US Army and US Air Force, in three wars. In 1953, Ed was an Air Force fighter pilot in the Korean war, shot down and held captive as a Prisoner of War for nine months where he was highly decorated upon his release. He didn't share his incredible survival story until many years later. You can watch his story here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BN-cSPBR9k.
After captivity, Ed continued to serve in the USAF and met the love of his life Sylvia (Sue) Field McCarthy, in Reno, Nevada. In 1969, he moved his family to Casselberry, FL. Major Izbicky retired from the USAF that same year and began his second career with the US Postal Service and later with Kennedy Space Center. Scores of Casselberry residents looked forward to their chats with him while receiving their mail. Their pets looked forward to his visits as well - he always carried treats for them. The Izbicky home was a special gathering place for all, especially the many friends of their children.
Ed and Sue fully retired in the early 1990s but remained active with the parish community and with many service organizations. Ed and Sue loved their home in Casselberry, and Ed heroically cared for Sue through a tough journey for many years until her death in 2014.
Ed is well known across Central Florida for his military heroics. But he was equally known for his incredible kindness, sense of humor, neighborly generosity, community service, and for being the amazing husband and father he was to Ann, Andy and Grace. His family is blessed to know what a full life he had and will miss him tremendously.
Mr. Izbicky is predeceased by his wife Sylvia (Sue) Izbicky, his mother, Henrietta, father, Frank, 8 siblings and his beloved daughter, Ann Marie. Ed is survived by his children, Andrew George (Linda) and Grace Ferretti (Marlus), and by his two grandchildren, Andrew George Jr. and Kyle Edward Izbicky.
