Amalia Zapata Naranjo, 92, of Apopka, Florida, passed away on November 15, 2020. She was born in Tamesis, Colombia on June 10, 1928. She married Carlos Obdulio Naranjo on December 23, 1955, and became his widow on October 24, 1964.
Amalia had a difficult and painful start in life, marked by the loss of her mother at the age of 3, separation from her beloved grandparents, and having to flee from home at the age of 15. But these misfortunes only gave her the strength, courage and determination to change her path in life. Throughout her journey, she had many accomplishments even though life had provided limited resources, which only proved her strong will to persevere and prove to the world that she was not afraid to overcome obstacles.
She did not have the privilege to receive a formal education, but she had an ambition to learn therefore welcoming any opportunity to grow and expand her knowledge and abilities. Among the many trades that she learned were nursing skills, acting, hairdresser, cake decorator, sewing, embroidery, cooking, and arts and crafts. However, her most distinguished talent was her beautiful singing voice. It stood out among all others. Before marriage, she sang with a traveling performing company and recorded a record that became well known in Colombia in the 1950’s. But she gave up her singing career to fulfil her greatest dream which was to create a family of her own. As a result of her marriage, she birthed two daughters.
After becoming a widow, she faced dire circumstances that would once again force her to make decisions to change her destiny so she ventured to the United States. She adapted to life in the United States, became part of the work force, and fell in love with the American dream of finding a better life for herself and her daughters. She loved this country as much as she did her own.
As her family grew, she dedicated the rest of her life caring for her four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren who were her pride and joy. However, she never gave up her love for singing, and serviced the Lord for 29 years in the Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church choir in Apopka.
Until the end of her life, she sang sharing her talent with whoever had the pleasure of meeting her. All who knew her describe her as a free spirit, full of life, and charisma.
She will forever live in our hearts, and will be missed by those she left behind, her daughters, Sylvia and Marina, her grandchildren, Stanley, Yulimey, Alexandra, and Christopher, and her great-grandchildren, Carlos Daniel, Elizabeth, Isabella, Abigail, Sebastian, Natalie, and Esteban.
Private funeral arrangements will be held at 11:00 am, on December 5, 2020, at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
